Reclaimed bricks are an environmentally sound
choice as brick-making is an energy intensive process. Reusing them therefore saves the energy required to make new bricks. And, for listed buildings and conservation areas, reclaimed may be the only choice acceptable for planning permission.
Reclaimed bricks add unique character to new build and restoration properties alike.
In Northern Europe and Britain, bricks became the building material of choice in the Early Middle Ages. This was especially true in areas where stone was scarce or difficult to access. In our yard, we stock bricks from the Tudor era up to the early 20th century. This includes Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian bricks (subject to availability).
Most of our reclaims are handmade in moulds or made using early mechanised methods like pressed stock bricks and wirecuts. Many will have been made before industrialisation and standardisation of building materials so they can vary greatly in size, finish and colour. Weathering, salts, paint and soot are also often a visible on reclaimed bricks. We feel this only adds the charm and character of the finished build.
The condition of these bricks can also vary greatly depending on the care taken in demolition and reclamation and the type of mortar used in the original build. We take care to sort, clean and stack our reclaimed bricks by hand to minimise wastage. However, we do recommend adding an extra 10% to your estimated quantity to allow for breakage and personal choice when laying.
Please get in touch if you need larger quantities than are shown in stock — we may be able to source additional quantities for you.
Please note that all reclaimed bricks and roofing slates are exempt from our returns policy and therefore non-refundable. See full details here
