Crafted using traditional blacksmithing methods, these beeswax finish hand forged D handles emphasise strength and authenticity. Skilled smiths hammer each handle into shape from mild steel, heating the metal in fire before shaping it on an anvil. This process ensures every piece carries subtle variations that highlight genuine craftsmanship. Applied to warm metal, the beeswax creates a protective coating with a soft, matte texture. This treatment preserves the natural colour of the steel while giving the handle a rich and aged look.
Hand forged D handles are most commonly fitted to plank and ledged doors in combination with traditional T hinges. This pairing gives doors both strength and an authentic period style. For heavier doors, choose larger versions of these handles to ensuring practical use alongside their decorative presence. Because they come in a range of sizes, they work equally well on interior doors, exterior entrances, cupboards, and gates. Their adaptability makes them a versatile choice for a wide range of projects.
Although these hand forged handles are not reclaimed, they have spent many years in storage. This long storage period has resulted in a naturally aged surface, further enhanced by the beeswax finish. The soft sheen of the wax coating highlights subtle marks from forging, making each piece unique. Hand forged D handles therefore carry an appearance that sits comfortably alongside genuinely old ironwork.
Their traditional design also complements thumb latches, T hinges, and other period door furniture. This makes them an excellent choice for cottages, farmhouses, barns, or heritage-style newbuilds. They introduce rustic detail without appearing new or manufactured. Because they blend with both original and reproduction fittings, they offer flexibility in restoration or new design projects.
Choosing beeswax finish hand forged D handles ensures long-lasting strength, authentic craftsmanship, and a finish that enhances natural materials. These handles add depth and character to any door, reflecting the enduring traditions of British ironwork. Each handle is practical, durable, and full of subtle detail, making it a fitting choice for anyone seeking period authenticity.
