Reclaimed BT Telegraph Pole
This reclaimed British Telecom telegraph pole echoes those originally developed in the nineteenth century, made from Scots Pine, Larch or Douglas Fir. It remains structurally sound and offers use as a sleeper alternative or, cut down, makes sturdy garden seating and small tables. Alternatively, this pole would make a series of unique garden bug hotels, aiding the pollination of flowers.
Dimensions- L22ft x 5″ Dia. (L6.7m x Dia. 12.7cm)

This reclaimed BT telegraph pole echoes those originally developed in the nineteenth century, wooden poles that carried vital communications across Britain’s expanding railways and towns. Early networks relied on durable timber because metal proved costly, heavy, and difficult to install at scale. Over time, engineers refined pole design, spacing, and preservation to maximise strength and service life.
This reclaimed BT telegraph pole reflects that practical heritage through visible wear, retained fittings, and proven durability. Traditionally, suppliers selected softwoods like Scots pine, larch, and Douglas fir for their strength to weight ratio. These timbers absorbed preservative treatments well, resisting rot, insects, and ground moisture for decades. As a result, poles survived harsh weather, mechanical loading, and repeated maintenance.
Measuring 22ft long, this reclaimed BT telegraph pole tapers from 8 inches to 5 inches along its length. It still carries sections of original cabling, alongside metal foot pegs used by climbing engineers. A single identification tag remains attached, adding industrial character and intrigue. The tag suggests it stood first from a distribution point pole, although its original location remains unknown.
Despite surface marks from service and recovery, this reclaimed BT telegraph pole remains structurally sound and dependable. Consequently, it offers exceptional flexibility for landscaping, play, or creative construction. Used whole, it forms a striking raised border, sleeper alternative, or boundary marker. Cut down, it becomes robust garden stools, rustic seating, or informal tables.
With fittings removed, this BT telegraph pole can be sawn into random sections for stepping stones. This approach creates a tactile children’s play route encouraging balance, confidence, and outdoor exploration. Furthermore, designers often repurpose poles as pergola posts, swing frames, or sculptural features.
Choosing reclaimed timber reduces demand for newly felled trees and lowers embodied carbon. Additionally, reuse celebrates material longevity, craftsmanship, and honest ageing. Therefore, this reclaimed telegraph pole suits projects valuing sustainability, character, and proven performance. Moreover, reclaimed infrastructure adds authenticity while supporting circular design principles across gardens. Importantly, weathered grain and history offer uniqueness impossible to replicate today.
