Blue Clay Shield Roof Tiles 11″ x 7 ” Handmade (Reclaimed)

These reclaimed Staffordshire Blue clay shield design roof tiles bring history, craft, and drama to traditional and contemporary buildings alike. Made from dense Etruria Marl clay, Staffordshire Blue clay fires to deep blue tones. The colour forms through high temperature firing in a low oxygen kiln environment. As a result, the clay becomes extremely hard, durable, and weather resistant. This strength made it famous across Britain for engineering bricks and roofing.

These blue clay shield roof tiles draw inspiration from late twelfth century heater shields used in heraldry and armour. Their curved bases and pointed tops interlock when laid correctly. Consequently, the roof surface forms a flowing fish scale pattern. This effect looks richer and more decorative than standard rectangular tiles. Although not rare, this pattern appears far less often on reclaimed roofs. Therefore, sourcing matching quantities takes time and expertise, which affects the price.

Aside from shape, the Etruria blue clay deepens the visual impact of the roof. Subtle variations appear across each tile due to handmade production. These differences create movement and depth across large roof areas. When sunlight shifts, the surface changes gently throughout the day. Used with reclaimed bricks or hand cut walling stone, the result feels mythic and story driven. In this setting, blue clay shield roof tiles suggest folklore, old roads, and wild landscapes.

Weathered and Durable

As reclaimed materials, each tile carries clear signs of age and the handmaking process. Minor size differences remain visible after laying, while light lichen patches appear on some faces and small chips soften edges. Rather than weaken them, this weathering suits both the age and original firing methods.

Using reclaimed roofing materials offers clear benefits. Firstly, it reduces demand for new clay extraction and firing. Secondly, reclaimed tiles suit conservation projects and sensitive planning areas. They also blend naturally with older buildings. Moreover, blue clay shield roof tiles already proved their durability over decades. Their density resists frost damage and water penetration. For builders seeking character, sustainability, and proven performance, blue clay shield roof tiles offer a rare opportunity. Finally, blue clay roof tiles create roofs that feel rooted, expressive, and unmistakably individual.
