Victorian Vented Ridge Tile Salt Glazed
These Victorian vented ridge tiles combine practical ventilation with decorative craftsmanship, essential on period rooflines but perhaps now more suited to use in the garden. Their durable, salt glazed finish provides decades more service as a patio focal point, raising smaller plant pots, or in pairs standing either side of a pathway entrance. They show signs of age and prior use in the remnants of mortar, worn edges and small chips.
Dimensions- L19″ x W12″ x H24″ (L48.2cm x W30.5cm x H61cm)
Please note, due to the nature of production, the age of the items and process of reclamation, there are likely to be imperfections and wear marks.

Along with standard ridge tiles, these reclaimed Victorian vented ridge tiles once formed striking architectural details along traditional British rooflines. Builders installed vented ridge tiles along the peak of a roof to improve airflow through the roof space. This ventilation helps reduce condensation, allowing trapped moisture and warm air to escape safely. As a result, roof timbers stay drier and structures remain healthier over time.
Victorian vented ridge tiles combined practical ventilation with decorative craftsmanship. Their raised form allowed air to pass through openings while protecting the roof beneath from rain. These examples feature three rectangular vents beneath a crenelated top, creating a distinctive and recognisable silhouette. In addition, the softened rounded corners reduce harsh lines and give the pieces a more decorative presence.
These Victorian vented ridge tiles are made from salt glazed stoneware clay, a traditional firing method used widely in the nineteenth century. During salt glazing, potters introduced rock salt into the kiln while firing the clay. The salt vapour reacted with silica in the clay body and formed a natural glass like surface. This process produced a dense, slightly textured glaze that bonded permanently to the clay.
Salt glazing created surfaces that resisted water, frost, and environmental wear extremely well. Therefore, Victorian vented ridge tiles could deal with decades of exposure on exposed roof ridges. The same durability makes them particularly suitable for outdoor garden use today.
Standing approximately twenty four inches high, these Victorian vented ridge tiles create a noticeable architectural feature wherever they stand. Their height and form naturally draw the eye, making them excellent additions to patios, terraces, and planting displays. For example, they can support smaller plant pots while bringing height and variation across a planting arrangement.
Placed individually, these vented ridge tiles add structure among flowers or beside garden paths. Used as a pair, they can frame entrances or mark the corners of paved areas. With some imagination, they can even form distinctive water features within larger landscape designs.
Because these Victorian ridge tiles are reclaimed antiques, they display gentle signs of age and previous use. Minor edge wear, small chips, and patches of lichen appear across parts of the surface. However, this natural weathering gives each piece an authentic patina that blends easily within cottage gardens or relaxed planting schemes.
