Description

Cast Iron Drain Grille 13 1/2″ Wide

This reclaimed cast iron drain grille combines practical durability with distinctive industrial character for gardens, period properties and restoration projects. Modelled on the familiar roadside rainwater grilles found throughout Britain, this smaller version likely served a domestic drainage system. Measuring 13 1/2 inches square with a depth of 2 1/2 inches, this substantial feature weighs an impressive 22kg.

Cast iron became widely used during the Industrial Revolution because manufacturers valued its strength, longevity and casting versatility. Foundries produced gutters, drainpipes and grilles in large quantities while maintaining consistent shapes and dependable structural performance. Consequently, cast iron quickly became a preferred material for water management systems across towns, factories and private homes. Its dense composition withstands constant exposure to rainwater, frost and changing temperatures with very little ongoing maintenance. Furthermore, cast iron develops a protective oxidised surface layer, which helps slow deeper corrosion over many decades.

This reclaimed cast iron drain grille displays clear signs of age and previous use through worn edges and surface corrosion. One grille also features a minor breakage to the bedding flange, although this damage does not affect practical installation. We currently hold two examples of this reclaimed cast iron drain grille, each displaying its own distinctive weathered appearance. One grille opens freely, while the second remains jammed shut after years of disuse and exposure. However, with suitable leverage and careful handling, the mechanism should release and function once again.

The Alternative Uses Of Drain Grilles

Beyond drainage applications, this reclaimed cast iron drain grille offers several creative possibilities within traditional garden design. Placed beneath a flower pot, the grille forms an unusual display stand with excellent drainage beneath planted containers. Installed within garden partition walls, the open pattern creates sightlines while allowing sunlight to filter through shaded spaces. As a result, hidden corners gain additional light and visual interest without sacrificing enclosure or structure. Alternatively, the grille suits use as part of a larger water feature.

Choosing reclaimed water management features also supports environmentally responsible construction by extending the lifespan of existing architectural materials. Reclaimed cast iron products reduce manufacturing demand while preserving historic craftsmanship and traditional engineering methods. Moreover, older cast iron often demonstrates exceptional durability because it has already survived decades of demanding outdoor conditions. This reclaimed cast iron drain grille therefore provides practical drainage, decorative versatility and authentic industrial character within one enduring feature.
