Sutton Cottage Hospital handmade bricks carry nearly 130 years of architectural and local Midlands history within every individual piece. The cottage hospital began life as a nursing home in 1897 before becoming an eight-bed cottage hospital during 1907. Later, the hospital joined the NHS in 1948 and continued serving the local community for decades afterwards. Over the last 18 months, interior refurbishment works carefully recovered these reclaimed antique bricks from the historic building.
The presence of both handmade and wirecut bricks likely reflects the hospital’s expansion during 1923. Construction methods and manufacturing technologies changed rapidly during the early twentieth century, especially across the Midlands brickmaking industry. Consequently, builders often combined traditional handmade products with newer machine produced bricks during extension and renovation projects. Sutton Cottage handmade bricks therefore provide valuable insight into changing construction practices across different historical periods.
These reclaimed orange bricks display clear signs of previous use and natural ageing developed over many decades. Mortar remnants, light discolouration, small chips, and worn edges contribute to their authentic reclaimed appearance. Furthermore, these imperfections provide visual depth and individuality impossible to replicate with newly manufactured materials. Sutton Cottage handmade bricks therefore suit restoration work, garden walls, period extensions, and interior feature projects requiring genuine aged materials.
Each brick measures 9 1/4 inches long, 4 1/2 inches wide, and 3 inches high. Because they follow Imperial sizing, builders should consider dimensions carefully before planning new construction or repair work. However, Imperial bricks remain highly desirable for heritage properties and older buildings throughout the United Kingdom.
The distinctive orange colouring comes from locally sourced clay used within Birmingham area brickworks and surrounding Midlands kilns. Brickmakers from Handsworth, Yardley, Aston, and Digbeth supplied materials across a wide regional area for many years. As a result, Sutton Cottage Hospital handmade bricks appear across Birmingham and throughout neighbouring towns and villages alike.
Choosing reclaimed materials also supports environmentally responsible construction and reduces unnecessary landfill waste. Reclaimed bricks lower demand for newly fired products, helping reduce energy consumption and raw material extraction. In addition, Sutton Cottage handmade bricks preserve genuine historic character while delivering durable and practical building materials for future projects. Their proven longevity demonstrates the lasting quality of traditional Midlands brickmaking methods.
