Antique Blacksmiths Post Vise-Wrought Iron
Blacksmiths have used the leg or post vise, like this antique example, for centuries to secure hot metal during heavy forging operations. Perhaps now best suited to use as a pre-industrial display piece, this vise could also be refurbished to useable condition. It’s complete with its original spring although most moving parts require freeing up before any intended use.
Dimensions- L19″ x W5″ x H41″ (L48cm x W12.8cm x H104cm)
Please note, due to the nature of production, the age of the items and process of reclamation, there are likely to be imperfections and wear marks.

Blacksmiths have used the leg or post vise, like this antique example, for centuries to secure hot metal during heavy forging operations. Indeed, Denis Diderot documented this exact tool design in his famous 1771 Encyclopédie plate. Unlike a standard cast bench vise, an antique blacksmith’s post vise features a long vertical leg that transfers hammer blows straight to the floor. Consequently, this heavy-duty design prevents energy loss and protects bench mountings from shattering during violent strikes. Blacksmiths primarily use this tool for hammering, twisting, punching, and chiselling hot ironwork.
The range of photographs showcase a classic antique blacksmith’s post vise crafted from hand-forged wrought iron.
Material: Hand-forged wrought iron
Features: Pivot jaw, heavy screw mechanism, integrated leaf spring, mounting bracket, long leg post
Condition: Heavily weathered surface rust, authentic patina, intact structural components, minor pitting
Furthermore, decades of forge work have coated the metal in a rich, dark oxidised patina. However, the original screw thread, turning handle, and tension spring remain remarkably complete.
Length 19” (48cm)
Width 5” (12.8cm)
Height 41” (104cm)
While metalworkers can still use this tool in a modern forge, creative designers value its sculptural form. For instance, mounting this antique blacksmith’s post vise creates a striking industrial feature on exposed brickwork or wooden beams. Additionally, interior designers often repurpose this rustic fixture as a unique coat rack, bookend, or statement workshop display.
Choosing reclaimed pre-industrial tools preserves historic British metalworking heritage while reducing demand for new manufacturing. Moreover, hand-forged wrought iron offers exceptional toughness that modern cast alloys rarely match. Ultimately, acquiring a reclaimed blacksmith’s post vise brings timeless historical narrative and rugged practical character into any space.
In addition, Watling Reclamation carries bench vises and blacksmiths anvils that, together with a post vise, creates a visual array of workshop implements.
