This striking pair of reclaimed sandstone four way pier caps offers presence, history, and lasting character for traditional properties and landscapes. Pier caps have crowned gateposts and boundary piers for centuries, protecting masonry from water while signalling status and ownership. Historically, homeowners often carved names or dates into them to mark pride of place.
Sandstone proved ideal for this purpose due to its strength, workability, and resistance to weathering. Stonemasons shaped it with precision while allowing it to age gracefully outdoors. Over time, sandstone develops surface texture rather than structural weakness, making it well suited to exposed settings. As a result, many original examples still survive today.
These reclaimed sandstone four way pier caps feature the classic gable top form with a popular four way slope. This design efficiently sheds rainwater while creating strong visual balance. Once positioned on large driveway gateposts, they announced the house name “Avon” with quiet authority. One cap bears “Avon” while the other reads “House”, both carved deeply into the stone.
Although the original building remains unconfirmed, several Avon Houses exist across the country. This uncertainty adds intrigue while preserving genuine architectural provenance. The surfaces of these pier caps display lichen spotting, small chips, and natural sandstone discolouration from decades of exposure. Consequently, the patina helps the stone blend effortlessly with existing walls. One stone has a repaired crack.
Each of these sandstone four way pier caps measures between 40cm and 49cm. They weigh an impressive 175kg, giving them serious permanence. Once installed, repositioning them requires significant effort and planning.
Beyond gateposts, sandstone four way pier caps suit entrance markers that guide vehicles within set boundaries. They also work as distinctive garden features. When surrounded by planting, they introduce mystery and encourage exploration for children and adults alike.
Using reclaimed stone pier caps supports sustainable building practices while preserving craftsmanship. Reuse reduces demand for new quarrying and keeps historic materials in circulation. These features bring authenticity, durability, and visual depth that modern replicas struggle to achieve.
