Medieval Style Fire Basket
This reclaimed Medieval style fire basket combines impressive weight, decorative detailing and practical construction within a compact footprint. Years of previous service have left this reclaimed piece with surface corrosion, worn edges and several minor knocks and dings. However, those imperfections create an authentic aged patina impossible to reproduce convincingly with modern manufacturing methods.
Dimensions- W22″ x D11″ x H19″ (W55.9cm x D28cm x H48.2cm)

Cast iron, as in this Medieval style fire basket, transformed British manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution because foundries produced strong household goods efficiently and affordably. Manufacturers quickly adopted cast iron for fireplaces, grates and cooking equipment because it tolerated intense heat exceptionally well. Furthermore, cast iron retained warmth effectively while resisting warping through repeated heating and cooling cycles. Those qualities still make cast iron a perfect material for fireplace inserts and accessories today, while blending seamlessly with natural stone surrounds.
This reclaimed Medieval style fire basket combines impressive weight, decorative detailing and practical construction within a compact footprint. Measuring only 22 inches wide, this substantial piece weighs an impressive 25 kilograms. Consequently, the fire basket feels stable, durable and reassuringly solid beside the hearth. The Medieval style fire basket features a striking portcullis surround formed from pointed stiles rivetted onto horizontal rails. Uprights rise from each corner, creating a bold silhouette inspired by medieval defensive architecture.
The front uprights display the classic fleur de Lis motif, adding elegance to the otherwise imposing structure. Meanwhile, the rear uprights feature decorative mushroom finials that soften the overall appearance beautifully. A simple removable grille forms the grate itself, allowing straightforward cleaning and practical everyday maintenance. Overall, this Medieval style fire basket balances decorative appeal with genuine usability.
Years of previous service have left this reclaimed piece with surface corrosion, worn edges and several minor knocks and dings. However, those imperfections create an authentic aged patina impossible to reproduce convincingly with modern manufacturing methods. Unlike thinner contemporary reproductions, this Medieval style fire basket possesses genuine historic character shaped through decades of practical use. Additionally, the corrosion remains surface deep and responds well to careful restoration using a wire brush and steady effort.
Beyond fireplace use, this reclaimed fire basket also suits several decorative interior roles. Filled with dried flowers, it creates a striking rustic display with strong architectural presence. Alternatively, it stores soft toys attractively or forms a practical umbrella stand within hallways and boot rooms. Reclaimed fireplace accessories also support sustainable interior design by reducing waste and preserving original craftsmanship. Older cast iron pieces frequently outperform modern alternatives because manufacturers originally prioritised durability over rapid production methods. Finally, this cast iron fire basket introduces authentic period character without relying upon artificial ageing or imitation finishes.
