Description
Oxford University Yorkstone Steps Reclaimed From Merton College 18″ x 6″
These reclaimed Yorkstone steps from Oxford University combine craftsmanship, history, and natural beauty in one remarkable architectural feature. Yorkstone is a durable sandstone quarried mainly in Yorkshire, known for its dense grain and warm, earthy tones. Used for centuries in Britain’s finest buildings, it’s strong, slip resistant, and weatherproof. These qualities make Yorkstone the perfect material for steps, thresholds, and other exterior features exposed to daily use and changing weather.
The Yorkstone steps were recovered from Merton College, one of the oldest colleges in Oxford University, founded in 1264. Removed during a 2025 refurbishment, they were recovered alongside flagstones and copings. Each of the four steps measures 18 inches deep and 6 inches high, with varying lengths that form a graceful, reducing-width stairway. With a slight overlap, the complete set covers approximately 57 inches in depth and 24 inches in height. This configuration suggests it once led to a single door entranceway within the historic college grounds.
Historical Weathering
As reclaimed pieces, these university Yorkstone steps show visible signs of age and genuine use. Their surfaces display weathering, minor chips, and worn edges, all contributing to a naturally aged patina. Subtle discolouration from years of environmental exposure enhances their authentic appearance. When used in period properties, these Oxford University Yorkstone steps blend effortlessly with existing materials. In contrast, their history and texture create striking balance when incorporated into contemporary designs.
Using reclaimed architectural materials like these Yorkstone steps offers both environmental and aesthetic benefits. Reuse reduces quarrying, conserves resources, and prevents valuable stone from going to waste. Additionally, reclaimed stone carries a depth of history that new materials cannot replicate. Each step represents heritage, craftsmanship, and enduring strength.
The Oxford University Yorkstone steps bring together sustainability, history, and character. They provide a tangible link to one of Britain’s most respected universities while offering beauty and practicality for new settings. Whether restoring a period building or enhancing a modern landscape, these Yorkstone steps add authenticity and lasting quality to any project.
