Description

Reclaimed Black Basalt Setts 4″

An enduring choice for classic driveways and garden paths, reclaimed black basalt setts offer strength and distinct character.

What Is Basalt Paving?

Basalt is a dense, fine-grained volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooling lava. Naturally durable and non-porous, basalt resists frost damage, heavy traffic, and moisture. Consequently, these robust physical traits make basalt an exceptional material for outdoor paving applications. Furthermore, reclaimed black basalt setts retain this natural structural integrity through decades of hard wear.

What Are Setts?

Setts are small, hand-dressed paving blocks traditionally used to pave roads, courtyards, and pathways. Often confused with cobbles, setts feature roughly squared edges rather than rounded river-stone shapes. Furthermore, setts offer superior stability under vehicles due to their blocky shape and interlocking layout.

These black basalt setts are sold individually or in bulk bags or 4sqm.

Authentic Reclaimed Character

Recovered from an urban refurbishment project in the Midlands, these setts display genuine historic charm. Remnants of old mortar and soil cling to the lower sides. Additionally, small chips from the reclamation process mark their surfaces. Decades of foot traffic have naturally smoothed the top faces and soft edges. Thus, these reclaimed black basalt setts blend effortlessly into established gardens and period properties.

Measuring a nominal four-inch cube, individual pieces vary slightly in shape and depth. Therefore, finished projects gain an organic, hand-crafted feel without clinical regularity. Available individually or in bulk bags, they suit coursed rows, fan designs, circles, or spirals. Clearly, reclaimed black basalt setts add a dramatic visual impact that plain concrete slabs lack.

How to Install Reclaimed Basalt Setts

  1. Excavate and Prep: Dig the site to a depth of 200mm, then compact a 150mm sub-base layer of MoD Type 1 aggregate.

  2. Lay Mortar Bed: Spread a full 30mm bed of moist sharp sand and cement mortar.

  3. Position Setts: Tap each block down securely with a rubber mallet, adjusting for minor height variations.

  4. Grout Joints: Fill all joints using a brush-in pavement jointing compound or traditional sand-cement mortar.

Environmental Benefits of Reclaimed Paving

Choosing reclaimed materials dramatically reduces the demand for new stone quarrying. Reclaiming existing paving saves considerable carbon emissions otherwise generated during global transport and industrial processing. Landscapers actively seek these rare blocks because basalt is less common than traditional granite paving. Ultimately, reclaimed black basalt setts deliver exceptional sustainability alongside timeless architectural heritage.
