Vintage architectural salvage for modern interiors doesn’t get much more stylish than these reclaimed textured glass bricks. Originating in the mid 1900’s, identified by the specific textured design, what was once dated decor has become a sought after interior design icon.
Glass bricks gained rapid popularity across the UK during the early to mid-20th century. Furthermore, their heyday peaked around the 1930s to 1980s in Art Deco and modernist architecture. Builders installed these solid structural units to draw clear sunlight into dark corridors and stairwells.
Manufacturers pressed molten glass into two hollow halves before fusing them together at extremely high temperatures. This process created an insulating internal vacuum seal.
These reclaimed textured glass bricks offer exceptional physical strength and timeless appeal.

This classic crosshatch ribbing pattern diffuses direct sunlight effectively. Consequently, the textured design minimises harsh glare while providing maximum light transmission.
Because these units date from the mid 1900s, they show expected signs of prior outdoor use. Specifically, you will notice surface dirt, minor edge chips, and remnants of old mortar.
However, you can easily clean these reclaimed textured glass bricks before installation.
First, chip away old mortar remnants using gentle taps from a light brick hammer.
Next, wash the surface dirt away with warm water and standard dish soap.
Finally, dry each block with a clean cloth to reveal bright glass underneath.
Choosing reclaimed building products drastically reduces carbon emissions from new manufacturing processes. Additionally, salvage items add authentic historical character that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate. High-quality salvaged glass offers decades of reliable performance without warping or degrading over time. Therefore, buying reclaimed textured glass bricks supports sustainable design while saving classic materials from landfill sites.
Today, glass bricks are experiencing a massive popularity resurgence across contemporary UK spaces. Furthermore, open-concept layouts often lack privacy, making textured partitions an ideal solution.
Designers frequently incorporate reclaimed textured glass bricks into:
High-end apartment room dividers
Stylish cocktail bar fronts and restaurant counters
Bright walk-in shower enclosures and bathroom walls
Feature statement entryways and internal transom lights
Installing glass blocks requires patience and precise alignment.
First, prepare a level, sturdy base along your chosen wall track.
Next, apply glass block mortar evenly along the base and side panels.
Then, position your reclaimed textured glass bricks carefully, using plastic spacers between every block.
After that, insert reinforcing steel rods into horizontal mortar joints every two rows for structural integrity.
Subsequently, check each course with a spirit level to ensure perfect alignment.
Finally, smooth the joints with a pointing tool and wipe excess mortar off the glass before it cures.
At Watling Reclamation we have limited stock of these and blue glass bricks.
