This single batch of reclaimed red and buff quarry tiles offers 8sqm of authentic, characterful flooring. The tiles come from one original floor, ensuring consistent colour tones and weathering throughout. As a result, the batch feels cohesive while still celebrating individual variation. Minor edge wear, surface discolouration and small chips appear across the tiles. However, this honest ageing creates a rich patina that new materials simply cannot replicate.
Quarry tiles first became popular in Britain during the Victorian era. Manufacturers fired natural clay at high temperatures to create dense, hardwearing tiles. Unlike glazed ceramics, quarry tiles remain unglazed, which gives them their natural matt finish. Traditionally, makers pressed clay into moulds, then kiln fired the tiles to achieve exceptional strength. This robust process explains why so many historic floors still survive today.
These reclaimed red and buff quarry tiles measure 6 inches square and 1 inch deep. Their solid construction makes them suitable for heavy foot traffic in kitchens, hallways and garden rooms. Moreover, their high thermal mass allows them to conduct, store and radiate heat efficiently. When paired with underfloor heating, they provide steady, energy-efficient warmth throughout the space.
This batch includes both full red and buff tiles and cut triangular edge pieces. The cut pieces are not included within the 8sqm coverage. Instead, they complete the perimeter when the full tiles are laid in a diamond pattern. Consequently, you can achieve a traditional layout with a clean, considered finish. With the addition of blue quarry tiles, a truly unique pattern is created.
Red and buff quarry tiles remain popular because they balance practicality with heritage character. Their earthy tones complement period properties and soften newer interiors. Furthermore, choosing reclaimed red and buff quarry tiles reduces demand for newly manufactured materials. This lowers embodied carbon and prevents valuable resources from going to waste.
Because this batch was recovered carefully, the tiles retain structural integrity despite visible wear. That wear tells a story and adds depth to the finished floor. Red and buff quarry tiles like these offer durability, sustainability and proven performance in one enduring package.
