Large Sandstone Staddle Stones Set of 4

This set of four large Sandstone staddle stones, hand cut from sandstone, brings authentic rural character to any garden or outdoor space. Originally, staddle stones supported granaries and storage barns, keeping food supplies off the ground and safe from rodents. Their broad caps stopped animals climbing up, while the narrow bases provided stability on uneven terrain.

Made from regional sandstone, these four large staddle stones likely come from the Cotswolds, Herefordshire, or parts of Wales. Sandstone from these areas is tough and durable while maintaining its strength and workability. It’s easy to shape by hand and weathers beautifully over time. As a result, it’s ideal for outdoor features that must endure constant exposure. Moreover, the stone in this set has aged naturally, with the surface showing clear signs of its past life.

Each of the four large sandstone staddle stones stands between 85cm and 95cm tall. The cap diameter is around 52cm to 60cm, giving them a substantial presence in any setting. All pieces are heavily weathered, with scattered patches of moss and lichen on the tops. The bases show natural discolouration from decades outdoors. Small chips and scrapes across the surfaces add to their aged appearance and help root them in their rural origins.

Versatile Use

These four large sandstone staddle stones suit use in both formal gardens and wilder, more natural landscapes. They can serve as sculptural elements on patios or as focal points within planting schemes. Their scale makes them noticeable without being overpowering, and their form references a long agricultural history.

Using reclaimed sandstone garden features such as these staddle stones brings a unique depth to your space. They add visual interest while reducing demand for newly quarried stone. Their patina, formed over generations, is impossible to replicate with new materials. These are functional objects transformed by time into decorative features with purpose and presence. Choosing four large staddle stones like these connects your landscape to the working countryside of the past while offering beauty and durability in the present.
