Reclaimed Glazed Pearlescent Tiles
These reclaimed glazed pearlescent tiles combine traditional craftsmanship with a distinctive modern sheen. Created by adding metallic oxides or mica particles, these elements fuse into the glaze during firing. The resulting subtle metal flake effect gives each tile depth and movement as light shifts across it. Ideal for use in rooms with spotlighting and drifting sunlight.

These reclaimed glazed pearlescent tiles combine traditional craftsmanship with a distinctive modern sheen. Ceramic tiles have been used for thousands of years, with origins in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Over time, the art of tile-making spread across Europe, reaching new heights during the industrial era. In Britain, Stoke-on-Trent became the heart of ceramic production, thanks to its clay-rich soil and skilled workforce. Among the respected manufacturers was H & E Smith Ltd., established in 1926 and still producing architectural ceramics of exceptional quality. Their tiles have graced buildings, transport hubs and heritage restorations across the UK and beyond.
The glaze on these reclaimed glazed pearlescent tiles is particularly striking. Created by adding metallic oxides or mica particles to the glaze mixture, the surface takes on a soft reflective sheen. When fired at high temperature, these elements fuse into the glaze, producing a subtle metal flake effect. This gives each tile depth and movement as light shifts across it. Under focused or directional lighting, especially in kitchens or bathrooms, the surface catches and reflects light beautifully.
Although these pearlescent glazed tiles appear almost black in photographs, they are actually a deep reddish brown. The true colour reveals itself at the edges, adding warmth and richness to any design scheme. Measuring 4 inches square, each tile offers limited coverage but a strong decorative impact. With only 26 tiles available, this small batch is ideal for feature areas, detailed borders or individual tiles for restoration work.
These reclaimed glazed pearlescent tiles show small variations and subtle signs of age, evidence of their authentic history. Using reclaimed ceramics reduces waste, preserves energy, and supports more sustainable building practices. Each reused tile helps prevent valuable materials from entering landfill while offering aesthetic qualities rarely matched by new stock.
Whether used as accents, splashback details or part of a larger project, this reclaimed glazed pearlescent tiles collection provides both heritage and artistry. Their distinctive glaze and rich colour make them a smart choice for designers seeking authenticity, craftsmanship and environmental responsibility.
Combine with a range of ceramic tiles to create a truly unique wall design.
