Calf Nose Blue Bricks offer a strong blend of period character and practical use for restoration work and heritage properties. These reclaimed bricks display the deep blue to black colouring typical of vitrified clay, along with a smooth face and an aged patina that adds real depth to any project. Their distinctive appearance makes them ideal for matching older brickwork or introducing a bold architectural detail to modern schemes.
The defining feature of Calf Nose Blue Bricks is their curved end, which has a broader radius and softer line than standard bullnose bricks. This gentle contour helps soften edges and form clean, sweeping transitions. They perform especially well on brick work pillars, where they add visual interest and subtle refinement. Their shape also suits door and window openings, supporting both aesthetic quality and structural practicality.
These reclaimed bricks measure 9” long, 4 1/2” wide and 3” high, with a calf nose radius on one side. Their proportions make them suitable for a wide range of uses. When installed as window sills, they offer a classic appearance. If laid flat, we recommend sealing them with two coats of RBS Hardseal clear sealant to reduce water absorption and prolong their service life.
Staffordshire Blue refers to a traditional engineering brick produced from Etruria Marl clay found in Staffordshire. During manufacture, the bricks undergo firing at very high temperatures in a low oxygen (reduction) atmosphere. This process vitrifies the clay, creating a dense, extremely hard unit with its signature blue to black colour. The result is a highly durable brick celebrated for its strength, low porosity and striking appearance.
Eco-conscious builders value reclaimed Calf Nose Blue Bricks because repurposing them reduces waste and limits the need for new production. Their natural patina, subtle tonal variations and gently worn surfaces introduce authentic character to any design. Their contoured profile lends refinement to walls, steps and path edges, while the weathered finish ensures an effortless fit within traditional or contemporary settings.
In summary, Calf Nose Blue Bricks deliver durability, sustainability and strong visual appeal. Their curved profile, reclaimed nature and broad design potential make them an excellent choice for restoration and new builds alike.
