Description

Reclaimed Antique Yorkstone Millstone C19th- 7′ Diameter

This reclaimed antique Yorkstone millstone delivers outstanding presence within both traditional and contemporary landscapes. Measuring an immense 7 feet in diameter, it weighs almost 3.5 tonnes. Consequently, careful planning is essential before installation. Its impressive 16 ½-inch width further increases its impact, whether displayed upright or laid flat.

At our yard, we position this vast stone upright against a solid wall. Therefore, most of the weight bears safely downwards. However, when placed independently within a landscape, the stone requires substantial structural support. Correct installation ensures safe long-term positioning and protects surrounding surfaces.

Laid flat, this reclaimed, antique millstone creates a striking outdoor Yorkstone table base. A circular glass top works particularly well and highlights the stone beneath. Alternatively, the surface looks superb planted with bright seasonal flowers and trailing greenery. The 7-inch square centre axle hole also creates exciting landscaping possibilities. Furthermore, the 24-inch diameter securing plate recess allows installation of a central pole. This feature can support a large parasol or even an antique water pump. As a result, the stone easily transforms into a substantial water feature.

Millstones formed an essential part of British agriculture and industry for centuries. Traditionally, mills ground grain into flour for local communities across Britain. Yorkshire became especially well known for producing high-quality millstones from hard wearing sandstone deposits. Craftsmen valued Yorkstone and Millstone Grit because both resisted heavy wear and maintained rough grinding surfaces.

Sturdy, Durable and Historic Stone

Yorkstone is a specific type of sandstone quarried mainly in Yorkshire. It belongs to the broader geological category known as Millstone Grit. However, Yorkstone usually features tighter grains and more consistent colouring. Gritstone often appears coarser and contains larger visible particles. Both materials offer excellent durability, weather resistance and compressive strength. Therefore, they suited demanding industrial use perfectly, leading to high popularity of reclaimed antique Yorkstone millstones centuries later.

This reclaimed antique millstone displays nearly 200 years of natural weathering across every surface of Yorkstone. Patches of lichen, softened edges and minor chips reinforce its considerable age and working history. These original features create depth, texture and authenticity impossible to reproduce artificially.

Reclaimed landscape features also provide important environmental benefits. Reusing original stone reduces quarrying demand and prevents valuable historic materials entering landfill. Moreover, antique architectural pieces introduce genuine permanence and character into carefully designed outdoor spaces.
