This antique Neo Classical Sundial sundial measures 130″ tall x 20″ wide x 20″ deep.
Mid 19thc limestone octagonal carved stone sundial. Set on an octagonal base leading to an octagonal vase form quartered with classical rings and surmounted with garlands. Terminating in classical roundel supported by upturned acanthus scrolls.
The bronze sundial atop, which is almost certainly original to base, bears the inscription “turn your face to the sun and shadows will fall behind.” The inscription purports to relate to the New England poet and essayist Walter Whitham (1819-1892) who was part of the ”Transcendentalism” movement of the liberation of philosophy. Interestingly the stone is very similar to American Brownstone.
