Description

Blue Bishops Hat Wall Coping 7″W Reclaimed

These reclaimed Staffordshire blue Bishop’s Hat wall copings provide both protection and historic character. Each coping measures 7 inches wide and weighs a substantial 6kg. Stock available at time of writing creates a continuous 24 foot run, excluding mortar joints.

Wall copings have protected masonry for centuries. Builders introduced them to shield wall cores from penetrating rainwater. By directing water away from the wall face, copings prevent saturation and frost damage. Consequently, they extend the life of brick and stone structures.

The Bishop’s Hat design remains one of the most recognisable profiles. It features square edges with a rounded, raised central ridge. This distinctive form resembles the traditional headwear of a bishop or priest. In addition, twin drip channels run along either side. These channels form an essential part of blue Bishop’s Hat wall copings. They throw rainwater clear of the wall face and reduce staining.

Staffordshire Blue refers to high quality engineering bricks fired from Etruria marl clay in Staffordshire. Brickmakers fire the clay at extremely high temperatures in low oxygen kilns. As a result, the iron rich clay vitrifies and produces a dense, blue toned finish. This process creates exceptionally strong and frost resistant copings. Therefore, blue Bishop’s Hat wall copings withstand decades of exposure.

Reclaimed Patina

These reclaimed examples show clear signs of prior use. You will notice remnants of mortar, light environmental discolouration, and small chips. However, this honest wear brings an authentic patina. It allows blue Bishop’s Hat wall copings to blend seamlessly into established brickwork. Furthermore, the aged surface softens the appearance of newly built walls.

Each coping measures 12 inches long with a 1 inch upstand and 3 inch overall height. Despite their modest dimensions, they remain solid and reassuringly weighty. These Bishop’s Hat wall copings suit careful repair of period walls or new builds using reclaimed bricks. By choosing reclaimed materials, you reduce waste, lower embodied carbon, and preserve traditional craftsmanship. Consequently, these reclaimed Bishop’s Hat wall copings offer both practical protection and lasting heritage value.
