Buff Vented Chimney Pot
This buff vented chimney pot, from renowned Scottish manufacturer Garnkirk, offers genuine nineteenth century character for garden and architectural settings. Unlike our other examples, this chimney pot is plugged with a concrete cap. The plug creates a stable platform for smaller pots or urns. Although careful removal is possible, garden use makes retaining the plug practical.

This buff vented chimney pot offers genuine nineteenth century character for garden and architectural settings. Crafted from buff earthenware, it displays a rich ochre patina. Years of environmental exposure have created varied tones across the surface. In addition, patches of lichen, small chips, and fine cracks confirm its age. As a result, each buff vented chimney pot carries a surface that new reproductions cannot replicate.
Chimney pots became common in Britain from the seventeenth century onwards. They improved chimney draught and directed smoke safely away from rooftops. During the Victorian period, decorative forms gained popularity as industry expanded. Manufacturers produced pots in large numbers, combining function with architectural detail. Consequently, chimney pots became defining features of Britain’s rooflines.
This example stands 30 inches tall and follows an octagonal form from base to rim. Subtle changes in width add visual interest along its height. At the top, triangular vents appear on each face. These vents help regulate airflow while introducing distinctive geometric detail. Therefore, this buff vented chimney pot combines practical design with sculptural presence.
The base carries a clear Garnkirk stamp, linking it to the Garnkirk Fireclay Company. Based in Lanarkshire, the company ceased trading in 1898. This closure confirms the pot as an authentic antique. Every buff vented chimney pot from Garnkirk represents a piece of Scotland’s industrial heritage.
Unlike our other chimney pots, this octagonal vented example includes a concrete cap. The cap creates a stable platform for smaller pots or urns. Although careful removal is possible, garden use makes retaining the plug practical. Positioned among planting, the pot provides height and structure.
Reclaimed roofing features offer clear environmental and aesthetic benefits. By reusing original materials, you reduce waste and avoid new manufacturing impact. Furthermore, older earthenware often displays superior density and craftsmanship. In both formal and wild gardens, this reclaimed vented chimney pot introduces authentic texture and history. It stands as a robust decorative feature with proven durability and heritage value.
