Carved Limestone Whalley Fireplace

Stunning Carved Limestone Whalley Fireplace with Cut Central Whale Motif and Motto. The Latin text reads ”Mirabile In Profundis” meaning ‘Wonderful in the depths’.

Measuring: 60″ wide x 54″ high x 9″ deep and the hearth measures 60″ wide x 19½”.

Constructed in stone with an incised relief of a spouting whale atop the Whalley family motto “Mirabile in Profundus” meaning “Wonderful in the depths” or “A wonderful object in the deep”. The Whalley family has a colourful history from the beginnings of Sir Richard Whalley in the 16thc through the English civil war to the earliest periods of Anglo American colonies . The family of Whalley is thought to be derived from Wyamurus Waley a standard bearer recorded at the battle of Hastings and later knighted by William the Conquerer in 1066.

This good scale white Limestone fireplace of historical interest is most probably 19thc, but seems to reference the man Robert Whalley who fled to the Americas after several years of being pursued for his part in the execution of Charles I . Robert was well educated in the Classics eventually changing his name to that of Theophilis (a Roman 9th century Roman Emporer).

He became a farmer and by repute a shore whaler in Nantucket area. A tenuous yet plausible link to a romanticized version of history that the Victorians were so fond of.

We can repair any chips or damages and remove the text or motif if required for an additional cost. Fire Basket and accessories are not included.
