Description

Cast Iron Log Stove with Glass Fronted Doors 24″ W

This is a Hunter Herald log-burning stove (most likely a vintage Hunter Herald 4 Mk1 model), with cast iron double-door. Cast iron absorbs extreme heat and radiates warmth evenly long after the fire dies. Consequently, a cast iron log stove delivers superior thermal efficiency and long-term durability compared to thin steel alternatives.

Key Features & Identification Markers

  • Canopy: Features the distinct sloped/trapezoidal cast iron canopy with a raised ornate scroll decorative motif centrally mounted on the top section.

  • Doors: Classic double-door design with rectangular glass panes, external hinge pins, and sliding air control vents positioned at the bottom of each door frame.

  • Construction: Solid cast iron and heavy steel construction on stout, angled legs.

Condition Notes: Cast Iron Stove

  • Glazing: The left glass panel of this cast iron stove is broken and will require replacement stove glass and fresh rope sealing gasket.

  • Surface: Shows heavy surface oxidation/rust across the body, doors, and legs, but the main body structure is intact without visible body cracks. However, wire-brushing followed by high-temperature stove paint or grate polish will restore the finish.

Specifications & Performance

  • Height: 69 cm

  • Width: 33 cm

  • Length: 60 cm

  • Weight: 50 kg

  • Output: Approximately 5 kW to 7 kW heat output

  • Fuel Requirement: Roughly 3 to 4 cubic metres of seasoned hardwood logs annually

Condition & Refurbishment: Cast Iron Stove

This reclaimed appliance shows clear signs of age and prior operational use. Specifically, the doors show surface corrosion, and the thick glass sections have broken on the left door. Additionally, general wear and tear appears across the bodywork. However, homeowners can use this aged patina for decorative styling, although a full professional refurbishment is recommended before burning fuel.

Installation & Decor

Furthermore, a HETAS-certified engineer must install this piece onto a non-combustible hearth with a flexible flue liner. Naturally, this rugged cast iron log stove complements country cottage hearths, rustic farmhouses, and industrial loft interiors. You can also place this cast iron log stove inside a traditional brick inglenook fireplace.

Benefits of Reclaimed Heating

Choosing vintage heating salvage prevents heavy ironwork from entering landfills while reducing industrial manufacturing emissions. Besides environmental gains, salvaged appliances bring rich historical character that modern production runs cannot replicate. Ultimately, installing a reclaimed cast iron log stove combines sustainable home heating with authentic British heritage.
