Cast Iron Rain Hoppers

These reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers offer a durable and characterful solution for traditional rainwater management systems, or bring a unique aesthetic to wall planters. Cast Iron Rain Hopper 10″ W

These reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers offer a durable and characterful solution for traditional rainwater management systems. Positioned at the top of a downpipe, a hopper collects and directs water from guttering into drainage. This helps control water flow and prevents overflow during heavy rainfall.

Cast iron became widely used in Britain during the Industrial Revolution, when mass production transformed construction methods. Foundries produced strong, repeatable components for buildings, including pipes, gutters, and drainage fittings. As a result, cast iron quickly became a trusted material for external water systems.

The material suits rainwater goods because it provides exceptional strength and longevity. Cast iron resists impact damage and handles constant exposure to rain and temperature changes. Furthermore, when maintained correctly, it can last for well over a century. This durability explains why reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers remain functional after many decades.

These reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers measure approximately ten inches wide and ten inches high, excluding the joint flange. This compact sizing suits smaller roof sections, where controlled water flow is essential. Therefore, a single hopper works well for one roof face without overwhelming the system.

For larger roofs, multiple reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers require installation alongside appropriate guttering. Alternatively, a larger hopper may be used to manage higher water volumes efficiently. This flexibility allows systems to be tailored to different building sizes and drainage requirements.

Authentic Weathered Patina

As antique pieces, these reclaimed cast iron rain hoppers show clear signs of long term use. Peeling paint, surface corrosion, and worn edges reflect years exposed to the elements. One hopper also features a crack along the back, running from the top corner to the fixing plate. However, this damage is repairable and does not prevent continued use.

Using reclaimed cast iron hoppers offers clear environmental benefits by reducing waste and preserving valuable materials. In addition, these aged pieces integrate naturally with period properties and traditional designs.

Beyond their original purpose, these reclaimed cast iron hoppers also suit creative garden use. They can become wall mounted planters or form part of a decorative water feature.
