Double Cant Ironstone Copings – Reclaimed

These reclaimed double cant ironstone copings offer a practical and characterful solution for finishing garden or boundary walls. Used for centuries, wall copings protect masonry from rainwater damage. Indeed, by directing water away from the wall face, they help reduce long-term erosion and structural decay.

Double cant ironstone copings feature two angled slopes, known as cants, which allow rainwater to run off both sides of the wall. This profile improves drainage and offers a balanced, symmetrical finish. Exposed to the elements for decades, these particular copings show heavy weathering that reflects their long history.

The ironstone surface of these double cant copings bears patches of moss, lichen, and deep environmental staining. However, these marks of age create a natural patina that adds to their authenticity. Furthermore, worn edges, small chips, and mortar remnants along the sides and base highlight their previous use. Additionally, any leftover mortar can be removed with a brick hammer and careful tapping.

Ironstone, a dense and durable sedimentary rock, forms primarily in the Midlands and Oxfordshire. Its strength, earthy colour, and resistance to harsh weather make it ideal for wall copings. As a result, this stone weathers well, developing a surface that looks right at home in rural and heritage settings.

Reclaimed double cant ironstone copings blend seamlessly into period repair projects. Their age-worn surface prevents them from appearing out of place on older walls. At the same time, they offer a great option for new builds that aim to reflect local materials and construction traditions.

Adaptable Stone

These copings also suit garden projects where nature is left to grow freely. In wild gardens, they settle comfortably into the planting, becoming part of the landscape. Their aged appearance feels organic rather than manufactured.

Using reclaimed materials like these ironstone copings reduces waste and preserves the quality found in older stonework. These pieces have already stood the test of time and can continue to serve practical and visual purposes for decades to come.

Use with ironstone walling stone to create a complete, aged look, stone wall.
