Hand Forged Sliding Bolt 4″- Beeswax Finish

This beeswax finish, hand forged sliding bolt features a traditional fishtail handle, designed to give a more comfortable push and pull than a ball or necked end. Blacksmiths heat mild steel in fire, hammer it into shape on an anvil, and work it by hand until finished. This method produces a square section bolt with strength and subtle marks of forging that emphasise its authenticity. Applied to the warm metal, the beeswax finish creates a protective coating that highlights the natural colour of the steel. This finish leaves a soft, matte surface with a rich depth, enhancing the aged look of the ironwork.

Fishtail sliding bolts appeared in the seventeenth century and soon became common across rural homes and farm buildings. The flared handle shape resembled a fish tail and provided a larger surface to grip. This made operation easier compared with smaller ball or necked ends, while also giving the bolt a distinctive decorative character. Today, the design remains popular for traditional doors where strength and rustic detail are both required.

Hand forged sliding bolts like this are well suited to use with D handles, with beeswax finish, on timber plank doors. They also work effectively with T hinges, creating a consistent period style. For large or heavier doors, fitting several sliding bolts ensures greater security and reliability. Because these bolts come in various lengths, they can suit different door types, from small cupboard doors to larger barn entrances.

New Old Stock

Although not reclaimed, these bolts have spent years in storage, developing an aged surface that feels naturally weathered. The beeswax finish enhances this aged quality, ensuring each piece looks authentic while remaining entirely functional. Hand forged sliding bolt fittings of this style work particularly well with rustic latches and other period ironmongery.

Their design underlines a traditional aesthetic that sits comfortably in cottages, farmhouses, barn conversions, or heritage-inspired new builds. By choosing a hand forged sliding bolt with a fishtail handle, you gain both practicality and authentic detail. Each bolt reflects skilled blacksmithing, historic design, and a finish that ensures durability while complementing traditional timber joinery.
