Created using traditional blacksmithing methods, these penny end hand forged T hinges remain unchanged for centuries. Skilled makers hammer each hinge into shape from mild steel on an anvil, using fire to heat and soften the metal. The result is a strong and durable hinge that carries the character of genuine craft. A protective beeswax finish is then applied, giving the T hinges a soft, matte look while enhancing the natural texture of the steel. This finish not only protects the hinge but also highlights its aged patina.
The hand forged penny end design refers to the rounded, circular terminal at the end of the hinge strap. This style, seen on many period doors, provided both strength and decoration. The rounded end spreads the fixing load, preventing the hinge from tearing through timber, while also offering a distinctive decorative flourish. Hand forged T hinges with penny ends remain especially popular for plank and ledged doors.
Traditionally, these T hinges pair with a hand forged Suffolk latch, making them ideal for cottages, barns and heritage properties. For heavier doors, three hinges, known as a pair and a half, are often fitted to give extra strength. Available in a variety of sizes, these hinges can suit small cupboards, interior doors, or larger exterior entrances. Their flexibility makes them a practical option for many different applications.
Although not reclaimed, these pieces have spent years in storage, which has given them a naturally aged look. The beeswax finish further enhances this appearance, creating a subtle depth that blends well with both old and new timber. Hand forged T hinges in this style also combine beautifully with thumb latches and traditional D handles.
Their rustic design allows them to sit comfortably in period renovations while also working well in heritage-style new builds. By choosing these penny end T hinges, you bring authentic detailing and long-lasting quality to your doors. Each hinge reflects the skill of the smith and the traditions of British ironwork.
