These new Welsh slate and a half roofing slates offer durability, performance, and value for traditional and contemporary buildings across the UK. Historically, Welsh slate gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as rail transport expanded nationwide. Quarries in North Wales supplied strong, dense slate that outperformed many alternatives in harsh British weather. As a result, slate roofs became standard on houses, churches, and civic buildings throughout Britain.
Today, builders still specify Welsh slate because it lasts generations with minimal maintenance. Moreover, it resists frost, rain, and wind while retaining consistent strength over decades.
These particular slates measure 20 by 15 inches, known as slate and a half sizes. The format suits many roof pitches and allows flexible coursing on complex roof layouts. Importantly, new Welsh slate and a Half suits gable end fitting for both full reroofing projects and targeted repairs.
Although unused, these slates spent many years in careful storage before release. Consequently, they show light surface scratching, small chips, and gentle edge wear. However, this weathering remains cosmetic and never affects structural performance or fixing reliability. The slates remain sound, dense, and fully capable of long service on exposed roofs. Therefore, new Welsh slate and a Half works especially well on heritage refurbishments and extensions.
The blue grey tones suggest origin from Cwt y Bugail quarry in North Wales. That quarry is renowned for producing slates with subtle colour variation and refined grain. Furthermore, the colouring suits period properties and modern designs seeking restrained contrast. As a result, fixers achieve faster installation with fewer breakages and reduced labour time. Additionally, new Welsh slate and a Half supports precise fixing using traditional nails and methods.
These slates perform excellently on dwellings, outbuildings, barns, and listed structures. Because slate is natural, it offers low embodied energy compared with many roofing products. Therefore, choosing slate supports sustainable construction goals and long term environmental responsibility. In practical terms, new Welsh slate and a Half delivers reliable weatherproofing and visual consistency. The slates shed water efficiently and maintain stability under temperature changes. With proper fixing, roofs using these slates can last many decades.
Ultimately, new Welsh slate and a Half provides proven performance, easy installation, and excellent long term value. Use with standard 20″ x 12″ slates for complete roofing options.
