During the late 19th century, metal designs replaced traditional wooden-spoked wheels across British farms. Blacksmiths constructed these wheels using robust wrought iron spokes, a thick wrought rim, and a heavy cast iron central hub. Consequently, iron provided unmatched durability against thick farm mud and harsh weather conditions.
Decades of exposure to British elements give these reclaimed iron wagon wheels incredible character. Naturally, peeling layers of aged yellow paint reveal extensive surface corrosion and rich texture across the frame. Although no longer suitable for active farm cart use, their dramatic patina creates a wonderful focal point. Furthermore, the massive size delivers immediate visual impact to any indoor or outdoor space. Hung with a variety of small flower pots, these wheels make fabulous vertical potscapes.
We offer full refurbishment services for customers preferring a cleaner, restored appearance for these reclaimed iron wagon wheels. Specifically, our team can sandblast away the loose paint and rust before applying fresh paint. Please contact the Watling Reclamation office directly for further details and pricing options.
Choosing historic metalwork offers significant advantages over modern garden ornaments. Firstly, genuine antique iron features bring irreplaceable charm and heritage to modern landscapes. Secondly, reusing existing Victorian metalwork reduces demand for new manufacturing, supporting sustainable design practices. Additionally, sturdy iron structures withstand severe weather and last for generations with minimal maintenance. Ultimately, these historic weathered iron wagon wheels provide a unique story that mass-produced decorations cannot match.
