Description

Terracotta Ball Pier Caps 9″ Pair Reclaimed

This pair of reclaimed terracotta ball pier caps brings heritage detail to garden walls, patios or interior spaces. Each pier cap stands 45cm tall, with a 23cm wide square plinth that suits a double skin wall. The balls and plinths are currently separated, needing fresh mortar to secure them together. Although reclaimed, these terracotta ball pier caps remain visually complete and ready for reuse after minor repair.

Pier caps have long topped masonry pillars and gateposts, adding both visual interest and protection. Traditionally made from stone or concrete, they help shed water and prevent frost damage to brickwork. Terracotta, while less common, was used for decorative work during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Its bold colour and sculptural potential made it ideal for standout pieces like these.

Terracotta offers several advantages. It is durable, weather-resistant and rich in natural colour. When fired at high temperatures, it becomes hard, dense and suited to outdoor conditions. These terracotta ball pier caps show wear—small chips, discolouration, and surface scratches—but remain attractive and usable. One plinth has a crack around its circumference, though it stays intact and repair is possible.

Versatility

This kind of weathering creates a lived-in look that fits older properties and gardens with established planting. You might use these terracotta ball pier caps as sculptural features, perched on stone paving or peeking through greenery. Alternatively, their scale also suits focal points in wild gardens, where vines and moss can grow around them.

Choosing reclaimed materials like these supports sustainability and reduces waste. Instead of buying new, you preserve existing materials and give them a second life. Reclaimed items hold texture and history that new products cannot replicate. Indeed, these terracotta pier caps carry the marks of decades, yet they remain strong and visually striking.

Use them to add depth and interest to any space—indoors or out. Their presence always makes a statement.

Match with reclaimed bricks to create an authentic heritage wall.
