Description

Reclaimed Softwood Joists 8” x 2”

These reclaimed softwood joists were recovered during a local roof replacement and remain in solid, reusable condition. Each joist measures 8 inches by 2 inches, with lengths varying across the batch. Made from softwood, they offer an ideal balance of strength and weight, making them perfect for structural use in roofing and framing.

Softwood is a popular choice for joists thanks to its workability and reliable performance. It cuts easily and holds fixings well, making construction straightforward. Although these reclaimed softwood joists bear marks of their previous use—such as notches, nail holes, screw holes and surface discolouration—they remain structurally sound and ready for reuse.

Using reclaimed softwood joists supports sustainable building practices by reducing demand for new timber. Repurposing old wood keeps valuable materials in circulation and helps reduce landfill waste. While these joists were originally used in roofing, they also suit many creative interior uses. Shelving made from cleaned and sanded reclaimed wood brings real character to a space. Furniture makers value reclaimed timber for its lived-in surface and seasoned durability.

Alternative Uses

Unless properly weatherproofed, these joists are not suitable for outdoor use . Raised beds or exterior landscaping projects would require treatment before installation. Indoors, however, the reclaimed softwood joists offer excellent material for bespoke tables, benches or even panelling. Their aged appearance adds interest, while their strength provides lasting support.

Visible signs of use give each piece a unique look, without affecting performance. Many prefer this naturally aged aesthetic over new timber. With a light clean and sand, these reclaimed softwood joists reveal rich grain and warm tones beneath the surface wear.

Choosing reclaimed materials like these makes sense both economically and environmentally. You save money, reduce your carbon footprint and give new purpose to old resources. Whether reused as joists or transformed into one-of-a-kind projects, reclaimed joists provide a responsible and creative solution for builders and makers alike.
