Salt Glazed Air Brick Double Size Reclaimed 14″ x 9″

These reclaimed double size salt glazed air bricks are beautiful examples of traditional craftsmanship with practical design. Measuring 14 inches long, 9 inches high, and 3⅛ inches deep, each brick features a decorative pattern of concentric circles connected at the quarter-hour points. The design is not only attractive but also allows for efficient airflow. As reclaimed pieces, these salt glazed air bricks display gentle signs of wear, including small chips, edge marks, and traces of soot from previous use. The soot suggests they once served within a chimney flue, adding a layer of history and authenticity.

Air bricks were first introduced during the Victorian era to improve ventilation in buildings. Their purpose was to allow air to circulate beneath floors or behind walls, helping to prevent damp and rot. They remain an important feature in many period and modern structures. The double size of these salt glazed air bricks made them particularly effective where greater airflow was required, such as in larger houses or industrial buildings.

Salt glazing is a traditional firing technique in which common salt is introduced into the kiln during the final stage of firing. The sodium in the salt reacts with the silica in the clay to create a hard, glass-like surface. This glossy finish makes the bricks more durable and water-resistant. On air bricks, salt glazing provided protection against the elements while adding a subtle sheen that enhanced their visual appeal. The process also created gentle variations in tone, giving each brick its own distinctive character.

Old Brick, New tricks

Today, these vintage salt glazed air bricks offer versatile decorative and functional uses. Indoors, they make intriguing display pieces. When placed on a side table with candles behind, they cast fascinating shadows across the walls. Outdoors, they work beautifully as stands for flower pots or as features within garden walls. Because of their salt glaze, they can withstand rain and frost with ease.

Using reclaimed building materials such as these air bricks supports sustainable design. Each piece reduces waste, preserves history, and adds depth and texture to both traditional and contemporary spaces.
