They make great plinths for smaller flower pots, bringing height to a broad display. Alternatively, with some creative reworking, they add intrigue to water features and, used upside down, they make unique strawberry planters. Being salt glazed, they’re a durable garden piece.

These reclaimed salt glazed vented chimney caps offer both practical heritage design and decorative appeal for modern outdoor spaces. Traditionally, builders used vented ridge tiles along the top of a roof to release trapped air and moisture. This ventilation prevented condensation and protected roof timbers from damp related damage over time.
Although these are chimney caps, their function closely mirrors that of a vented ridge tile. Air passes through the three vents while the structure limits rain entering the flue or roof space. As a result, salt glazed vented chimney caps supported healthier buildings while maintaining an attractive roofline.
These examples are crafted from stoneware clay and finished using a traditional salt glazing technique. During firing, potters introduced salt into the kiln, where it vaporised and reacted with the clay surface. This reaction formed a durable, slightly textured glaze that bonded permanently to the body. Therefore, salt glazed vented chimney caps resist water penetration, frost, and long term weather exposure.
Standing approximately fourteen and a half inches high, these salt glazed vented chimney caps provide a subtle yet distinctive roof feature. Their rectangular profile includes three vents and a crenelated top, creating a balanced and practical design. In addition, the rounded corners soften the overall appearance, making them more visually appealing in garden settings.
Due to their robust construction, salt glazed vented chimney caps remain suitable for many years of outdoor use. Consequently, they now find new purpose in gardens, patios, and landscaped spaces. They introduce height among planting arrangements and help break up flat surfaces with vertical interest.
Placed individually, a vented chimney cap complements both formal layouts and relaxed planting schemes. Used in pairs, they can define entrances or frame pathways effectively. Furthermore, used upside down, they make unusual and intriguing strawberry planters.
With some creativity, these pieces can also become small water features or sculptural focal points. As reclaimed pieces, these vented chimney caps display natural ageing, including chips, edge wear, and patches of lichen. One example shows damage to the top, although the pieces remain in place. This weathered finish helps them sit comfortably within established cottage gardens or wild planting designs.
