Description

Salt Glazed Drainage Gully (Damaged)

This reclaimed salt glazed drainage gully, or planter, brings history, texture and function to any outdoor space. Originally built for drainage, it now offers many creative possibilities. The salt glazed drainage gully includes a cast iron grille cover—heavy, weathered and full of character. The base of the gully has sustained damage, with a section detached from the main body. However, all pieces remain and a skilled restorer could repair it effectively.

Salt glazing dates back to 15th-century Germany and became popular in Britain during the 19th century. The process involves throwing salt into a kiln at high temperatures. As the salt vaporises, it reacts with the clay to form a thin, glossy, orange-peel-like glaze. This finish is not just decorative—it’s incredibly tough and water-resistant.

A bottle gully drain traps foul smells below ground while allowing surface water to flow freely into the system. Its shape helps catch debris and keep the drainage pipe clear. That’s why salt glazing is ideal, for gullies. It produces a sealed, smooth surface that resists water, grime and frost damage over decades. The salt glaze finish also suits a chimney pots and planter.

Drain, Planter or Water Feature

Because this salt glazed drainage gully is reclaimed, it shows wear and weathering from past use. The surface bears marks of age, yet the main structure remains solid. With its natural brown-orange glaze and functional shape, it becomes more than just a relic. Some use it as a planter, with flowers spilling from its inlet and outlet. Others incorporate it into water features or garden sculptures.

Reclaimed pieces like this salt glazed drainage gully reduce demand for new materials. You prevent waste and protect traditional craftsmanship. Each mark and surface crack tells part of its story. Whether placed on a patio, hidden among greenery, or set into a stone wall, it adds depth. The drainage gully is more than a drain—it’s a survivor, ready for a new role in a new setting.

Combine with salt glazed chimney pots to populate a patio or garden area.
