Description

Small Blue Quarry Tile 2″ (Handmade)

Small Blue Quarry Tiles bring character and depth to any interior. These handmade, 2-inch square, tiles measure 1 inch deep and come from historic buildings. Each tile carries the marks of a previous life—minor wear, faint glue traces, and bits of mortar. You can easily remove these with a brick hammer and small blade. Though beautiful on their own, these tiles are most often used as the focal point in cabouchon flooring.

A cabouchon tile is a small square tile, often placed at the corners of larger quarry tiles. This layout forms a bold, repeating pattern. When paired with standard 6-inch or 9-inch red quarry tiles, Small Blue Quarry Tiles create a striking contrast. The result is a dynamic floor design that draws the eye and adds depth to the space.

Cabouchon flooring dates back to the 18th century and gained popularity during the Victorian era. Designers used this technique to add visual interest to grand entryways and hallways. As a result, it remains a popular choice for those seeking heritage flooring with distinctive character.

Craftsmen make blue quarry tiles using Staffordshire clay, which they fire at high temperatures to achieve a dense, vitrified finish. The deep blue tone comes from iron-rich minerals in the clay and the reduction firing process. These tiles are built to last and age gracefully over time.

Environmentally Friendly Choice

Choosing reclaimed materials like Small Blue Quarry Tiles helps reduce demand for new manufacturing. Indeed, this saves energy and keeps valuable materials out of landfills. Additionally, reclaimed tiles avoid the need for additional mining and transportation. By using what already exists, you help lower your project’s carbon footprint.

Each batch of Small Blue Quarry Tiles offers subtle variation in tone and texture. This adds a layer of authenticity that new tiles can’t match. Whether used alone or in a cabouchon design, these tiles offer a practical and beautiful way to repurpose historic materials. With careful cleaning and placement, they will bring lasting value to your floor.

Pair with Octagonal Quarry Tiles for an authentic look.
