These small rimmed terracotta chimney pots are reclaimed pieces full of visual interest and subtle individuality. Each measures 12 ½ inches in diameter and comes from the same building, yet every pot tells its own story. Although they share the same shape and scale, weathering has made each one unique. Some show patches of moss or lichen, while others feature bleaching or environmental discolouration from years of rooftop exposure.
Terracotta, made from fired natural clay, has long been used for chimney pots, like these small rimmed versions, due to its durability and weather resistance. It withstands heat, moisture and frost well, making it ideal for both practical and decorative use. Over time, terracotta develops a rich surface patina, which adds depth and interest to each piece. One of these chimney pots has sustained damage to the lower rim, detailed in the photos.
Terracotta chimney pots first became popular in the 19th century, when coal-burning fireplaces were common in British homes. Added to improve chimney draft they also protect flues from rain and debris. Several distinctive terracotta chimney pot styles developed over the years, including this small rimmed design . Common types include the cannon top, tulip top, crown top and roll top, each with its own silhouette and finish.
These small rimmed terracotta chimney pots make excellent garden planters. Their size and varied appearance create a strong visual impact when grouped together. Used on patios, gravel beds or amongst planting, they offer structure and texture. The variation in ageing gives them a natural fit in both wild and more formal gardens.
Reclaimed pieces like these small rimmed terracotta chimney pots support sustainable building practices. They keep high-quality materials in use and reduce the need for new production. Unlike modern imitations, each pot here carries visible signs of use and age, adding depth and authenticity to your outdoor space.
Whether used for their original purpose or repurposed in the garden, these small rimmed terracotta chimney pots bring real material character. Their solid construction and individual weathering make them a distinctive addition to any setting.
