This pair of Victorian Yorkstone pier caps brings scale, heritage and authority to any substantial boundary wall. Each cap measures approximately 27 inches square and 15 inches high. Consequently, every piece weighs around 300kg and requires a very solid supporting pillar.
Pier caps became prominent features during the Georgian and Victorian periods. Builders installed them to crown gateposts and structural piers. Their primary purpose was practical rather than decorative. By shedding rainwater away from masonry below, they reduced water ingress and long term damage.
These Victorian Yorkstone pier caps follow the classic four way, or Pyramid, design. Each side slopes gently downward to encourage effective water runoff. With an appropriate overhang, rainwater falls clear of the pillar beneath. As a result, the supporting structure remains protected from saturation and frost damage.
Yorkstone has long been valued for architectural walling and civic construction. Quarried in Yorkshire, this dense sandstone withstands decades of harsh British weather. Because of its strength, it copes easily with substantial weight and structural demands. Furthermore, Yorkstone works well under the mason’s tools, allowing crisp lines and balanced proportions.
These Victorian Yorkstone pier caps clearly demonstrate that enduring quality. Their surfaces show age and prior use across every face. Large patches of lichen sit beside small chips and softened edges. In addition, environmental discolouration deepens the tone of the stone. Therefore, the pair blends effortlessly with established and reclaimed walling.
One corner has chipped badly, with a large section sheared off. Fortunately, the detached piece remains present and can be refurbished for a seamless repair. Interestingly, one side of both Victorian Yorkstone pier caps is cut short. This alteration likely allowed them to sit neatly against a taller adjoining wall.
Choosing reclaimed walling features supports sustainable building practices. Rather than quarrying new stone, you reuse materials already proven over generations. In addition, reclaimed pieces carry authentic weathering that new stone cannot replicate.
Ultimately, these Victorian Yorkstone pier caps stand as magnificent icons from times past. Their impressive scale and historic character give any suitable garden walling a confident and distinguished finish.
