These reclaimed American pool table slates originate from five piece tables, and offer the basis for creative alternative uses like side tables and shelves. With some slates incorporating the cutouts for pockets, and all showing signs of age and prior use, these slates require some reworking for use outside their original purpose.

American Pool Table Slates Reclaimed
American pool developed from earlier slate table and cue sports played across Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Over time, the game evolved into the modern pool table based sport recognised today. As the sport developed, makers searched for a perfectly flat and reliable playing surface. Eventually, slate became the standard material for professional and domestic tables.
Slate works exceptionally well for this purpose because it is dense, stable, and naturally flat. Unlike timber, slate does not warp easily when temperatures or humidity levels change. Furthermore, its weight prevents unwanted movement during play and supports a smooth cloth surface. For these reasons, manufacturers around the world rely on slate when producing high quality pool tables.
These reclaimed American pool table slates come from a large five piece table configuration. Each slate measures approximately 1865 millimetres long, 730 millimetres wide, and 45 millimetres thick. In addition, each section weighs around 160 kilograms, reflecting the density required for stable gameplay. Five sections together once formed a complete playing surface.
You can clearly see the locating pins and matching holes along the internal edges of these American pool table slates. These features helped installers align the pieces accurately during table assembly. Bolt holes also appear along the outer sides where the original frame and bumpers secured the slates. End and central pieces include cut outs for pockets, while separator slates remain plain.
