Reclaimed Thick Yorkstone Flag with Cast Iron Drain

This Yorkstone flagstone, with cast iron drain grille, is a striking reclaimed piece that brings history and character to any outdoor project. The flagstone measures 24 inches long, 25 inches wide, and 6 inches thick. Combined, the drain and stone weigh approximately 120kg, giving it real presence in a garden or paved space.

Cast iron drains, and Yorkstone flags, have been used for centuries in water management systems. It first gained popularity in the 18th century during the rise of industrial Britain. Its strength, resistance to corrosion, and long lifespan made it ideal for outdoor and civil engineering uses. As a result, even today, cast iron remains one of the most durable materials for drainage covers and grilles.

Both cast iron drain and Yorkstone flag show signs of age and wear. A surface crack and deep chip sit to one side in the stone. This damage does not affect function. Instead, it enhances the piece’s rustic look and historic feel. Weathering across both stone and drain grille adds to its visual appeal.

Yorkstone

Yorkstone flagstones, as used with this cast iron drain, quarried in Yorkshire, are a dense sandstone prized for durability and resistance to wear. Indeed, it handles years of foot traffic, frost, and weather without breaking down. Consequently, Yorkstone remains the paving stone of choice for heritage restorations and hard-wearing outdoor surfaces.

This drain in a Yorkstone Flag suits use in period garden restorations, particularly in large Yorkstone-paved areas. It blends seamlessly with older materials and provides essential drainage. Alternatively, use it as part of a water feature or as a plinth for planters and sculptures.

Reclaimed materials like this drain and Yorkstone bring many benefits. They help reduce landfill waste and avoid the environmental cost of new production. They also provide a level of weathered detail and authenticity that modern materials simply can’t match.

Each Yorkstone flagstone shows its own story. It offers not just function, but also character. This is a lasting, practical piece that brings real depth to outdoor design.
