Reclaimed Ironstone Ball Finial 12″ D
This reclaimed Ironstone ball finial once crowned a pier cap, although the original plinth section is now missing. Used on its own, it works as a freestanding, sculptural garden object with visual impact. Placed among planting, its solid form contrasts strongly with foliage and softer garden textures and, alternatively, it works well as part of a larger water feature.
Dimensions- Diameter 12″ (30.5cm)
Please note, due to the nature of production, the age of the items and process of reclamation, there are likely to be imperfections and wear marks.

This reclaimed Ironstone ball finial once crowned a pier cap, although its original plinth section is now missing. As a result, the remaining form stands as a bold spherical garden feature with strong presence. Crafted from solid Ironstone, it offers weight, durability and a distinctly architectural feel. Ironstone is a dense sedimentary material rich in iron content and widely used in British construction.
Because of its strength, Ironstone withstands weather exposure, moisture and ground contact extremely well. For this reason, makers often chose it for boundary details requiring longevity and stability. This reclaimed Ironstone ball finial measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and weighs around 30 kilograms.
Over time, surface wear developed, including chips and surface wear, patches of lichen and natural colour variations. These marks reflect age and use rather than damage, giving the piece visual depth. Historically, Ironstone finials topped gateposts and walls to finish structures with authority. During the Victorian and Edwardian periods, such features balanced proportion and protected brickwork from water run off.
The reclaimed Ironstone ball finial would have signalled strength, permanence and careful craftsmanship at an entrance. Used today, it works as a freestanding garden object with sculptural impact. Placed among planting, the solid form contrasts strongly with foliage and softer garden textures. Alternatively, positioning it on paving or gravel highlights its mass and natural colouring. Some owners adapt pieces like this reclaimed Ironstone ball finial into water features or focal displays.
Choosing reclaimed garden features supports sustainable landscaping and responsible material reuse. Moreover, reclamation preserves skilled workmanship that modern mass production often lacks. Each reclaimed ball finial carries surface evidence of history that new stone cannot replicate. Consequently, it brings individuality and honesty to outdoor spaces.
This reclaimed Ironstone ball suits both traditional gardens and contemporary settings seeking contrast. Its simple geometry and weathered finish encourage creative use without overwhelming surrounding elements.
