Description
Vintage Solid Brass Weathervane Reclaimed (Origin: Portugal)
This vintage solid brass weathervane brings history, craftsmanship, and function together in one striking architectural feature. Weathervanes have appeared across Britain since the medieval period, often mounted on churches, barns, and farm buildings. They served a practical purpose by indicating wind direction, which proved vital for agriculture and daily planning.
Over time, weathervanes also became decorative symbols, reflecting local trades, beliefs, and rural life. Today, they remain popular in countryside settings, where heritage features continue to shape property design. A vintage solid brass weathervane therefore fits naturally within rural landscapes and traditional buildings.
This particular piece depicts a man chasing a fox carrying a goose, a scene rooted in agricultural storytelling. Although widely recognisable, this design originates from Portugal, where fox folklore remains common. As a result, the vintage solid brass weathervane carries both local and international cultural significance.
Crafted from solid brass, the figure has been cut and painted, creating a bold silhouette visible from a distance. The directional letters, painted steel, show minor bends and imperfections from age and previous use. With careful handling, these elements can be straightened while preserving their character.
It’s a Weathered Weathervane
Signs of wear include flaking paint and light corrosion on the wrought iron stem and bracket. These details confirm its reclaimed nature and contribute to a genuine aged appearance. Consequently, the vintage solid brass weathervane offers authenticity that newly manufactured pieces often lack.
Measuring five feet in all directions, this weathervane makes a strong visual statement. It remains fully functional when mounted on a roof, clearly indicating wind direction. Alternatively, it works well as a garden feature, where its height supports climbing plants such as clematis, honeysuckle, or wisteria. Embedded into an upright railway sleeper, it pulls double duty as sun dial and weathervane.
Choosing reclaimed architectural features helps reduce demand for new materials while preserving historic craftsmanship. It also introduces individuality into a space, as no two pieces share identical wear. Therefore, this vintage brass weathervane provides both environmental benefits and lasting visual interest.
