Gritstone, as used in this rectangular shallow stone trough, is a highly durable, coarse-grained type of sandstone. Historically, British artisans selected this hard rock because it resists severe frost damage and general wear exceptionally well.
Therefore, this tough material provides the perfect foundation for creating long-lasting garden water features and heavy-duty planters. This unique gritstone rectangular shallow trough highlights the incredible resilience of natural British stone.
Measuring 32¾” long, 20″ wide, and 9″ high, this item features a distinctive tapered interior bowl. Originally, farmworkers likely used this specific shape as a vegetable washer. Today, however, this lovely gritstone rectangular shallow trough functions perfectly as a rustic garden bird bath. Masonry experts hand carved this piece, leaving rugged chisel marks around the utilitarian outer sides. Meanwhile, they applied a much higher level of refinement around the smooth rim and shallow inner basin.
Currently, this authentic gritstone rectangular shallow trough exhibits a heavily weathered appearance. Specifically, the exterior surface displays natural patches of ancient lichen and attractive mineral discolouration. Additionally, a small hairline crack runs down the side, which naturally prevents the basin from holding water indefinitely. Fortunately, you can easily repair this minor blemish using standard stone epoxy. Alternatively, you can leave the crack exactly as it is to provide excellent drainage for alpine rockery plants. Consequently, this versatile gritstone rectangular shallow trough adapts easily to your specific landscaping requirements.
Furthermore, integrating reclaimed elements into your garden design provides several distinct advantages. First, buying genuine antique pieces prevents historic architectural salvage from ending up in landfill sites. Second, the historic patina introduces an established sense of maturity that modern store-bought items cannot match. Thanks to its subtle size, this gritstone rectangular shallow trough fits seamlessly onto small patio areas. Finally, the minimalist design also forms a striking focal point within contemporary outdoor spaces.
