Three Medium Staddle Stones-Red Sandstone Reclaimed

This set of three medium staddle stones, carved from red sandstone, offers a striking piece of rural heritage for any garden setting. Originally, staddle stones were used as supports for granaries, hayricks, and barns. Their wide, mushroom-like tops helped keep stored crops dry and protected from rodents. These practical objects have since become sculptural features in gardens, celebrated for their history and form.

Made of red sandstone, these three medium staddle stones are likely from the West Midlands or South Wales. Red sandstone is common in those regions and prized for its durability and warm colour. It weathers beautifully, developing deep tones and surface texture with age. As a result, it’s an ideal material for outdoor features exposed to the elements over many decades.

This set of three medium staddle stones stands around 80cm tall, with cap diameters of approximately 50cm. One of the caps has split along a natural layer in the stone, but most of the pieces remain in place. This natural wear highlights the age of the stones and their long history of use. Indeed, their weathered surfaces carry years of exposure, making them perfect for gardens seeking a grounded, historical feel.

Versatile Form

Whether placed in a formal garden or a wilder landscape, these three medium staddle stones add texture and structure. Alternatively, as focal points, they stand alone, draped in foliage as part of a planting scheme. Furthermore, their form connects directly to traditional agricultural practice, linking the modern garden to the rural past.

Using reclaimed features like these three medium staddle stones brings character and authenticity to outdoor spaces. At the same time, you reduce demand for newly quarried stone. Their wear, their weight, and their story all add depth to a garden without forcing the look. Each stone is handmade, unique, and rich with purpose. These are not replicas—they are real fragments of history, ready for reuse in a new environment.

Mix with terracotta planters for an eclectic patio display.
